Mom and 5 babies (Bensalem, PA)

We've lived in this house since 1992 and have always had a ground hog share our property. Last spring mom groundhog had five babies. In the fall, mom found homes for all the babies. We thought that was the end of them until next spring, but to our surprise one baby returned and has yet to hibernate. Just when we think he's gone for the rest of the winter, we'll catch him out and about eating grass. Does anyone else have a groundhog that has not hibernated yet?

The Peach Thief (Pittsburg)

This woodchuck loves to eat the flowers by our patio and the salad crops in our garden. He even stole the peaches off our peach tree! Looks like our place is a restaurant for him. Now our little fellow is hibernating, but I hope to see him again next summer.

Black Groundhogs (Delaware)

These two black groundhogs were rescued in Delaware after their mother was killed by a dog. Black groundhogs, called "melano" are rare. These two melano groundhogs were rescued, cared for, and released back into the wild by Hilary Taylor of the Delaware Wildlife Rehabilitator's Association (Bear, DE).

White Groundhog (Virginia)

This white groundhog has lived near College Lake in Lynchburg VA for at least five years, according to Bob Martin, who took this photo. White groundhogs are called "albino" but typically have pink eyes, however, this one's eyes are dark brown. Bob believes that this hog owes his long life to an underground abandoned drainage pipe that caused it not to have to cross the road on top of it.

Isabella - sleeps indoors

Bella sleeps "belly-up" between the washer and the dryer. Its a warm spot that must feel something like a burrow.

Berry climbs tree (Michigan)

This groundhog known as "Berry" from Eastpointe, Michigan (just north of Detroit by Lake St. Claire) climbs the mulberry tree to eat mulberries.

Clover - sits on owner's lap

Clover was nearly dead when we found her. We nursed the cub back to health and now she is considered part of the family. She lives under her master's house, and still likes to sit on his lap enjoying her favorite treat, graham crackers with cinnamon on top!

Isabella is spoon-fed oatmeal

Isabella ("Bella") was rescued as a cub and raised as a pet. Oatmeal is her favorite food, and she likes to be spoon-fed!

Garibaldi and Esmeralda

Alison Krug feeds her groundhogs, Garibaldi and Esmeralda, a product called bushy tail. It is a 9 x 9block of seeds and corn held together by molasses (she believes). "They absolutely love it!!!" she says. Garibaldi is pictured here.
